How to Teach Short Fiction I Overview The purpose of the Short Fiction I unit is to introduce students to essential skills necessary for understand prose fiction texts - especially the parts and how those parts contribute to the meaning of the work as a whole. Students' focus will be to understand the "what" and "why" of a text -- what description, dialogue, setting, structure, and speakers reveal about the author's meaning.
The texts in this portion of the unit are kept deliberately brief. Students may begin by reading partial texts or excerpts as skill builders before working to understand a longer text at AP level.
