The game in a nutshell

What is the Game?
The Game is (literally) a game we will be playing over the course of the year. You are not required to participate in the game, but obviously, if you opt out, you will miss the instruction and practice the game is intended to promote. However, that is your choice. If you choose to participate in the game, you must present me with a copy of the House Pact, signed by you. Click on the link for the House Pact. Signing the House Pact means that you commit to this game for a period of no fewer than nine weeks and cannot quit once you have started. However, if you originally opt out but later wish to join, you may do so. The purpose of the game is to provide a combination of supportive collaboration and spirited competition in which skills are practiced for points and gold. Since CCSD would find it challenging to provide actual gold, the term "gold" is to be understood as game tokens to be exchanged for valuable prizes worth having. Sometimes, those prizes can benefit individual players; sometimes the prizes can benefit an entire team; sometimes the prizes can be used to "disable" a rival. Points accumulated may be applied to one's personal grade and/or may also benefit the team as a whole. Please read on for a further description of this procedure. In the game, you'll compete against other noble Houses, usually through Jeopardy- or Varsity Quiz-style games to review the hoard of background knowledge that English 12 Honors generally requires. Sometimes, you'll compete as a whole group; sometimes you will compete as a set of individuals whose scores will be added to the whole. Game winners for the week will be awarded the honor of the Iron Throne and will be given gold and prizes. You can also improve your House's standing through doing extra credit work -- or through bribery, sneak attacks, and treachery (explained below). Really, you can do all of those things. |

The First War
Competition over Hoard of Wisdom
|
At this point, we will be ready to play in the first all-out war. Usually, only one or two Houses will battle against each other, but in a war, all houses battle, and whoever makes the most points collectively will take the Iron Throne for the first time.
The way that this will work is simple: Everyone will be assigned to learn or memorize an assigned portion of information from the Hoard of Wisdom. The Hoard is essentially a collection of background information, dates, allusions, and ideas that you should know in order to be more successful in English 12H. On the day of the big war, we will have a multiple-choice portion and a verbal competition portion. On these initial sections, the Gamemaster may allow both individual and collaborative work. |
After the War: Normal Gameplay
Strategizing and Plotting
House Standings
|
After the war establishes who's on the Iron Throne and we have an understanding of which Houses have the most and fewest points, routine gameplay can begin.
At the beginning of a week after a battle, a few minutes will be given at the beginning of class for strategy purposes. Here are some things you'll need to figure out:
When the battle is over, points for the battle AND for each member's individual points earned for normal classswork will be tallied up and averaged. (Individual, personal grades will never be published. Your privacy is important to me.) For example, Alyson of House Stark may have 234 points; Barry may have 127; Carlos may have 321; and Diana may have 300. Together, House Stark has an average of 245.5. No one besides Alyson, Barry, etc. knows anyone else's actual grade. |
