Identifying Motif Step 1: Identify Motifs

Close Reading for Motif
At many points in the novel, it is crucial to read for motif and connect it with the author's message or theme. Many of Bronte's motifs will form complex intersections with each other. Identify Motifs
There are a number of major motifs in Jane Eyre, of which these are only a small sample.* However, as you read, be on the lookout for them because you will be using them for your assessment. My suggestion is that you create a special symbol for them and tag moments in your book where you see them occur. Here are a few, with some suggestions for symbols below.
