|
Week Six
|
We worked throughout the week on the Dodsons and Tullivers passage from the 2014 Acorn Book and practiced multiple-choice test-taking techniques.
Specifically, we focused on writing a strong "compass" in a multiple-choice section from which the distractors had been removed. After developing the compasses, we then took the test WITH the distractors in place, in slightly more than AP time. YOUR HOMEWORK: For question 5, question 7, and question 9, find the "sock" in the answer choice you chose. Be prepared to discuss the sock-ishness of your answers next time. |
Week Four
|
MONDAY: We finished the Wolsey and wrote a thesis sentence using a template.
HOMEWORK: Read both the 2002 and 2007 poems, specifically Hardy and Collins. FRIDAY: We wrote an in-class analysis of the Collins poem. Analysis included the following:

Tuesday - We handed in the "Write 5 Thesis Statements" homework. Papers that were ready on time, on the date, and in final draft form including MLA style received extra credit.
REMINDER: Independent reading occurs on the 23rd. If you need to make up your independent reading because of an absence, you will have to do it IN CLASS AFTER SCHOOL. |
Week Two
|
Using the "How to Question Like a Four-Year Old" technique, we revised and handed in our thesis statements on "Plants."
We then revised the thesis and resubmitted it. Independent reading happens on the 23rd! |

Read and identify the conquer for the 2018 prompt, Olive Senior's poem "Plants." Look in your poetry packet on page 28.

Week Eight
|
We had our thesis writing assessment on King Lear. Please make this up ASAP before the end of the quarter.
In your poetry packet for all AP FRQ #1 questions from 1999-present, underline the command and conquer and develop conquer questions beginning with "What" for each. Need a refresher about what those terms mean? Consult the lecture notes on this page: https://burkesapliterature.weebly.com/how-to-teach-poetry-ii.html |
Week Six
|
HOMEWORK: Read through to the end of Act IV by Friday and have the entire play finished by the time we return from Thanksgiving. We will almost certainly have another in-class examination on the play. My personal advice would be to see a version of the play in full or see key scenes. SEE IT WITH SUBTITLES even if you are a native English speaker. It helps tremendously. _____________________ Credit Make-up for In-Class Essay Option open to everyone: Go to this page, Choose ANY TEN DIFFERENT prompts from 2000-onward. In ONE SENTENCE EACH, answer the question.
Option for people who got below a 3 on the FRQ in-class essay: Be here on THURS or FRI of this week. Prepare to answer an in-class FRQ on King Lear. |
Week Five
|
For MONDAY, please read and understand all major events for King Lear Acts II and III. High probability of there being a quiz.
Consult the Lear in Film page for possible versions of the play. Please read reviews/feedback first. You are not required to watch a version of the play. |
Week Four
|
Read and master all major events for pp. 3-69 for Tuesday (Act I of Lear). No, you don't have to read the stuff in the front unless you want to.

NOTE: With the Alexie, we have now discussed it twice. If you come in to redo the Alexie grade, it will be on a different passage. Come in with all short passages and texts we've annotated so far. When you redo a prompt, it is helpful to check to be sure you are following the directions. Your prompt may be returned to you with a "No change." You may still work on fixing it, but again, it must be in person. _________________________________________ Monday: We returned the Pride and Prejudice character claims.
