Overview: How Do Details Reveal Character?
As the old saying goes, the devil is in the details. Authors use a variety of techniques to imbue characters with personality and individuality, including dialogue, statements other characters make about them or they make about themselves, thoughts they have when alone or with others, and of course, the details of their actions, appearance, and environment. As always, we ask the fundamental question: What are these details DOING? How are the details helping the author convey the meaning of the text? |
